Having access to a class set of "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" book will allow students to be engaged while learning more about the life of a female slave through her eyes. "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" is a phenomenal story of slavery told through the eyes of a former slave, Harriet Jacobs. This novel tells a story from first hand experience that will allow students the chance to see slavery from a different perspective than traditionally displayed through textbooks and other academic resources. Throughout the American History I course, we go through early colonization and end with western expansion. During the last few weeks of my course, I would like the students to have the chance to read this book, out loud in the classroom setting to encourage questions and answers throughout, group discussion, and reflection. The time frame for reading, reflecting and assessing the novel will be approximately 4 to 5 days.
