My students have limited access to instruments until they join band in the 6th grade. Every day they ask when are they going to be able to play an instrument. Sadly, we do not have many to go around. Over the years I have been slowly adding instruments to our classroom so that they can all have a chance to play. With the addition of the two glockenspiels to the alto and bass xylophones that we already have; up to 6 children can play pitched instruments at one time. The students will be able to explore creating melodies, harmonies, and accompaniment to the songs that we sing in the classroom. With the addition of the hand drums; I will be able to put an instrument in the hand of each of my students. They will get to create rhythms and steady beats with their drums. These instruments will not just create beautiful music in our classroom but they will also instill in the students a sense of pride, responsibility, creativity, spontaneity, and joy. Although instruments are not the only or most important aspect of the music classroom; the absence of them stiffles the creativity and potential in our students to create something beautifully personal to them. Music is an expression of the soul. Not every child is an academic or athlete; sometimes they are the artists. These children need the healing release of music.
