My students attend our Title 1, TK-5 school, which serves 75 Kindergarten students, and around 400 students total. My class is full of eager and inquisitive five and six year olds who come to us from a variety of backgrounds. Several of my students come from families with parents who are not literate or do not speak English, and therefore cannot read to them in English at home. For many of my students, Kindergarten has been their first true experience with hearing literature that is read to them. Moreover, many students have not attended pre-school and so our Kindergarten is their first chance to learn to read letters, sounds, and words. My students are curious and interested in the magic that books hold for them.
