We are proud Vikings! Our high school is a rural community school located in Pride, LA. We are home to an amazing group of middle and high school students with varying degrees of physical and cognitive disabilities. It is my desire that my students improve their motor skills, enhance their creativity, and develop coping strategies that can be learned all while growing and cultivating a community garden! Through the development and implementation of a garden, students will learn to identify various vegetables and flowers. The students will learn how to properly care for plants, how to use appropriate gardening tools and all that is required for plants to thrive. Learning to grow and cultivate vegetables will help students to make healthy meal choices. This garden will give my students the opportunity to experience life sciences through hands-on learning. Gardening has also been shown to improve concentration and encourage the acquisition of knowledge through active learning skills! My students overcome obstacles daily due to the learning challenges and sometimes social and emotional issues they conquer daily. Gardening can help them to experience success outside of the classroom. The students can work cooperatively to complete tasks in the garden and watch how their hard work comes to life as flowers and plants begin to grow!
