As the only chemistry teacher at our high school, it is my job to create a science lab for students that both engage them and prepares them for college-level science courses. This chemistry course is designed to provide students the necessary skills to have a richer knowledge base in physics and chemistry. The curriculum includes concepts such as the structure of the atom, motion and forces, and the conservation of energy and matter. Students will use the silver nitrate, copper II sulfate, lead II sulfate, and hydro-chloric acid to witness a double replacement reaction through the Types of Reactions Lab. They will explore various elements on the Periodic Table, specifically metals, by using strontium chloride, sodium chloride, and barium chloride during the Flame Test Lab. The compounds listed above will be made into a solution and then burned on a wooden stick to visualize the color that the metal cation produces in the experiment. Furthermore, they will also have a deeper understanding of solubility by conducting several inquiry based activities that include using the ethanol to dissolve various solid compounds and the magnesium ribbon to record and observe how it reacts with heat and hydro-chloric acid when investigating the Properties of Elements Lab. By conducting these activities, students will be able to chemistry come alive!!
