As a School Counselor, I help students make a difference every day. I have 1100 students between two schools that need help with every day issues of divorce, grief, friendship, and resiliency. Hope Squad is a group of 35-40 students (at each school) that is trained in mental wellness, kindness, and friendship. We have activities throughout the year to teach the student body about keeping our bodies and minds healthy. These student wear a special shirt one day a week so if another student is struggling, i.e. in the lunchroom or playground, they know to reach out to one of these leaders for help. This reduces bullying and increases problem solving at the student level. Items such as books, tactile toys, puppets, and games will be used for educating the student leaders and student body about emotional regulation, when, who, where, and why to ask for help. Our goal is to spread kindness and help others become aware of how their actions (and inaction) affect others. We are also rolling out a new bully prevention program this year that the Hope Squad will demonstrate during assemblies and class presentations. Hope Squad is also trained in suicide prevention at the elementary level. We are there to help and increase problem solving skills at a young age in hopes students will internalize what they have learned throughout their lives.
