Every year my students love receiving their weekly edition of Scholastic News! They are so excited to learn new things and the especially love that they can take their articles home to share with their families. We also take advantage of the online component of Scholastic News! Many of the students are English language learners. They are able to go online and listen to the article in Spanish before we read it as a group in English. This helps them to expand their vocabularies in both English and Spanish! There are also fun videos that go along with the articles to help engage the students and give them background information about the weekly topic. Scholastic News covers many of the informational reading standards as well as many of the social studies standards. It is great for teaching non-fiction text features and allows the children to "experience" things that they may never be able to see.
