Some of my students have significant social, emotional, and behavior disorders stemming from trauma and missing skills. Social concepts can be challenging for us all, but especially for some of my students who have difficulty processing and regulating their emotions. Many children are able to naturally pick up on social skills - such as having a filter, accepting defeat, being flexible and patient, and using appropriate voice levels and tones, while my students require consistent redirection, guidance, structure, and instruction in these areas. Being able to read these kid friendly books will help develop those social-emotional skills that they are lacking. These books create a more meaningful connection to their personal narratives and make it easier to create a picture in their head of what is happening inside of them. Julia Cook is a fabulous author who has written and illustrated a variety of incredible books for children. Cook writes about a variety of topics such as losing games, accepting the word 'no', and how to use our voices appropriately in society. I am requesting a variety of social-emotional development books to enhance my classroom library. This will be a wonderful relationship building experience to deepen our perspective taking skills and work on our social skills. I plan to directly teach each main skill by reading the book and then working with my students to create helpful reminders on how to best access and use these skills throughout each day.
