Literacy is an essential part of a primary grade student's day. It is during the early years of elementary school that students work to develop their foundational skills. Without the proper time to develop these skills, students struggle to build stamina and independence.
In my classroom I encourage students to become independent readers by giving them time throughout the day to practice different reading strategies.
Not only is this time of the day essential for fostering independence, it is also a time when I am able to pull small groups & help struggling readers practice even more.
Independence is not developed overnight. It takes a lot of practice & explicit teaching of skills. My students will love having their own book boxes to use throughout the day to store books they are interested in! Book boxes are a great tool to have in the classroom because they give students ownership and control of what they are reading.
