All seventh graders in the state of Florida have to have a year of civics instruction. Since they don't study American history until 8th grade, it is difficult for some of them to relate to the events taking place during the time the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were being written. Reading the novel Johnny Tremain is one way that my 7th grade Language Arts curriculum can help civics students relate to this important time in our history. This is an excellent way to have cross-curricular education and to expand their knowledge of the time period as well as to help them with sustained reading.
