My students are expected to learn multiple reading skills throughout their first grade year. Some of the skills they are expected to learn are, reading comprehension, cause and effect, story elements, sequencing, author’s purpose, and point of view. I want to provide a variety of different stories and reading experiences throughout the year that will help them master those skills. Stories such as The Mermaid and Honey, Honey, Lion will help promote a deeper understanding of the literary skill being taught. I want my students to develop a love for reading and have the opportunity to explore different texts. A lot of the books I have asked for aren’t the typical early childhood books they are used to, meaning they are new and exciting to my students.
