I work at an urban high school in Baltimore City. Roughly forty percent of our students live in transitional housing, and most have difficult home lives plagued by all the ills of urban poverty. My journalism class has twelve students with all different backgrounds who are all amazing seniors. They have had difficult lives, but have always worked hard in school and not used their difficulties as an excuse not to excel. One student has a daughter with special needs. One has a father who goes in and out of jail. One is pregnant now with her second child. One has found a home in the urban debate league and is competing with students from private schools. They each have a difficult story, but they are survivors and have worked hard for their success. We want to create a school newspaper that celebrates the success our students can have, despite adversity. We want our students to have pride in their education and their school.
