Literacy is the focus of our school improvement plan. I run the writing center at our school, which ties directly into that goal. In the writing center, trained peer tutors help other students with their writing. However, our students have such low confidence in their own literacy that they do not make effective use of the writing center. We have to make the writing center as welcoming and comfortable an environment as possible to encourage students to take advantage of this valuable resource. The more comfortable the students are in the room, the better their work on their writing will be. Our tutors are trained to help make students who often feel vulnerable when sharing their writing feel at ease. However, studies show that flexible seating options in any classroom adds to students feeling comfortable in the environment and learning more as a result. We are hoping to provide more options for students who come into the writing center to make even more students feel at ease. The visually appealing room will make students want to come to the writing center more often and stay and work in the comfortable environment even longer.
