I work in a school district that exposure to trauma is common. I want to create a positive environment in which my students know they are safe and welcome. I want to create a calming center for my students so they have strategies to help and somewhere to go when they are feeling dysregulated. The fluorescent classroom lights create a harsh light that can cause headaches. The light diffusers will help avoid that. Exposure to trauma affects the way the brain develops. Students need to be able to physically manipulate things like sand and play doh in order to work out their stress. They also need small fidgets to help them work off any anxious energy so they are better able to focus on their work. Gel-e seats and kinetic sands are another way they can work off anxious energy, while remaining seated, they are great for helping students focus.
