In this unit students explore the experiences of people of in German occupied Poland in 1939. Students will read the novel Prisoner B-3087. Students will practice citing evidence and drawing inferences from this compelling text as they begin to analyze the story told from the perspective of Yanek, a 10 year old boy, who spent time in 10 different concentration camps. They will also read informational text to understand the time period and build background for the novel. We will then participate in a deep exploration of character and point of view: Students will combine their research about the Holocaust with specific quotes from Prisoner B-3087 while answering the question: How can one person make a difference when encountering a social challenge? They will also make connections between Yanek's experience and their own encounters with bias. If this project is funded, it will allow students to engage in rich text, participate in meaningful discussions, make connections between the past and the present. and become more socially aware.
