Living in a smaller southern city has so many advantages for our students. Everybody knows everybody, families are very important, the school is many times the main social outlet for people. Yet, we still seem to be missing many of the opportunities afforded those in larger, more cosmopolitan areas. Many of my third graders have never had the opportunity to actually handle money or even go shopping with a parent because of our low socio-economic make-up of our school. Having money manipulatives will allow these students to begin to have a "feel" for using money is a real-world situation. Going from very concrete materials to actual abstract mathematical concepts will be much easier with manipulatives.
