Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times, they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clipboards, sitting or laying on the floor with a clipboard, along with a futon, and stools. Students fell in love with idea of flexible seating and look forward to more options. Students are able to focus more when they have ownership and choices in their learning environment. Just like adults, 5th graders are more creative when they are comfortable and feel relaxed! Adding beanbag chairs and short stools will provide students with more options than they have now. I know these choices will be a hit with my students. The markers and laminator will be put to use in book projects. Students feel proud and important when they have their work laminated to preserve their hard work. Our classroom laminator recently stopped working, and the students have been disappointed. Not only do they love preserving their work, they are fascinated with the laminator itself! It is pretty cool to watch them as their work goes into and comes out of the laminator as their eyes light up! The wireless doorbell provides a way of signaling transitions within the classroom. No one has to raise their voice for transitions, which can become hectic at times. Also, the students love to push the button and choose different ring tones. All in all, my students look forward to receiving these new classroom additions and will be grateful that they were chosen! Sometimes it's just the small things that make the biggest difference!
