I teach full-day Kindergarten in a Title 1, turn-around school. We go from 8 to 4 and I have one parent volunteer who comes when she can, but usually there are 24 students and myself in the classroom. My students face obstacles in their home lives every day, from lack of food and support to incarcerated parents. My students are predominantly African-American and Latino. All of my students are on free lunch. They have worked so hard and accomplished so much this year. Nearly all of my students have mastered most of the Kindergarten standards. They need and deserve more opportunities to explore Literacy and develop their reading and writing skills in an independent and engaging way. They love centers and I know they would enjoy these activities very much.
