Many students in elementary school end up creating what I like to call "make and take" art. This is art without a purpose. Art for the sake of filling time. However, I want to introduce art to students as art was introduced to me. In a meaningful way, with a purpose of expression and self exploration. These students come from all backgrounds, different needs, and most come from low income families. Throughout school a lot of these students struggle in a normal class setting and art is where they can flourish. Art is special because when a student struggles with one aspect of the subject, there are more styles, material and options we will explore. My hope is to share art and the way meaningful art is a voice for these students. I believe they will be able to make art for themselves, about themselves and find materials and styles that work for their individual and unique voice. Our school represents 45 different zip codes and a number of different nationalities and I plan to celebrate that through art and an art voice. Now all we need is a drying rack, a safe place to store master pieces while they dry.
