My kindergarten students in Florida are experiencing many things for the first time in school. Many of them cannot name any instruments and cannot imitate the sounds and rhythms that instruments and music make. They are eager to explore and experience hands-on the world of music but do not have the resources to do so. More than 90% of my class live at or below the poverty line and come from neighborhoods where there are not many outlets to musically express themselves. My classroom has no proper instruments to help them express themselves as a 5 and 6 year old ought to.
