Our students need one set of audio books to be successful and confident when competing during the 2018-2019 school year. The WEMTA Battle of the Books is a statewide program that fosters a love of reading for all participants. Students read a variety of twenty titles selected by the state council in order to compete in friendly competitions on local and state-wide levels. The elementary division reads the nominated Golden Archer winners for the primary and intermediate levels plus a variety of other award winning titles. A few of these amazing titles this year include "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway", "I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World" and "Swindle". These titles provide a strong balance of perspectives, historical events and encourage reading for enjoyment. Students attend weekly meetings with their mentors, who are teachers and community members. Our program offers students the opportunity to meet in a small-group with their mentor (3:1) and discuss their "book of the week". Our students must be able to remember all titles, authors and specific details (characters, settings, plots, themes) from each of these twenty titles to compete successfully. Battles are a fast-paced and highly engaging way for students to collaborate with their peers and showcase their leadership skills. Your generous donation to our program will improve our classrooms by building both stronger readers and leaders. The one set of audio books we are requesting will allow our struggling students to gain confidence and feel success both in the classroom and during battles. All students will be able to use these audio books during their independent work time and free time at school to prepare for competitions. Together, we can inspire readers and leaders!
