When I think about what my students most need this year, it is an updated space to learn and grow that reflects who they are and, hopefully, who they will grow to be this year. That includes basic things like new flexible seating options and standard supplies we can't otherwise acquire like post-its and markers. Most importantly, though it includes an updated classroom library with a selection of novels written by authors of color telling the important stories my students need to hear. My room is already a special space. We spend one day a week in meditation, and we end every week with "Feel Good Friday," learning to improve our emotional intelligence by naming our feelings and processing them together as we navigate the stressful time that is middle school. We are not like most classrooms, and I want to ensure our space has everything it needs to serve this important population of kids. The supplies I am asking for directly impact our special space by ensuring we have everything we need to learn and grow together this year. The books I am asking for will serve to spark conversations and learning as my students engage with authentic, relevant texts that reflect the world today. I have no doubt that these students will, someday, change the world for the better. Be part of that change by helping the magic happen in my room!
