School On Wheels High School emphasizes project-based service learning where students design and carry out projects that directly serve our community. My students will choose an organization for which they will make quilts to donate. Such organizations include Project Linus, Quilts of Valor, and the UNM Cancer Center. Students will have the opportunity to tour and/or speak with representatives from these organizations in order to choose an organization for which they have an affinity. Quilting teaches important, transferable skills such as problem-solving, following and designing pattern instructions in sequence, and cultivating a growth mindset that most mistakes are repairable. Opportunities to work with geometric concepts like rotations, reflections and symmetry are ever-present in quilting.
