The amount of time children are spending on varying electronics today has decreased the amount of time children are spending developing other important components to childhood: imagination skills, creativity, and cooperative play skills. Open-ended materials such as blocks, Legos, sensory materials, and Magna-Tiles encourage students to work together to create and use objects in unique ways. For example, students can work together to build a grocery store using blocks or put Magna-Tiles together to make a rocket. Encouraging students to work together and share their ideas with another will prepare them to accept alternative viewpoints and cooperate with diverse groups of people. These materials will allow students to enhance their creativity and imagination skills as well as provide students with opportunities to work together cooperatively and, subsequently, enhance the sense of community in our classroom.
