Students in my kindergarten class begin to learn reading strategies, develop skills, stamina, and independent reading habits from the first day of school. Fostering and engaging their love of learning and reading requires them to freely take control of their own reading habits and hone in on their own reading practice. A great classroom library is essential to communicating the importance of literature. Book bins and shelves to easily browse and organize books, as well as flexible seating for reading practice allows kindergartners to become independent readers. This not only develops lifelong reading skills and strategies, but more importantly a lifelong love of reading.
