I am requesting a classroom set of student desks that are adjustable to allow students to either sit or stand at their desk during the school day. There are numerous physical and academic benefits to providing students with work spaces that allow them to stand. Children in first grade have a lot of energy and naturally move their bodies a lot. Requiring them to sit for multiple hours a day distracts them from the work they could be doing because they are fighting against their bodies' natural instincts. I believe a lot of the classroom management issues I deal with in my classroom could be resolved by allowing students flexibility between sitting and standing. Research shows that standing desks help students increase their focus as it allows them to move their bodies as needed while working or listening. Having standing desks would help me give my students what they need to be successful in our classroom. I incorporate movement and "brain breaks" as often as I can, but they still spend a majority of their day seated. I would love to use these desks to increase engagement and collaboration in my classroom, as well as helping to promote a healthy and productive lifestyle.
