As a second grade teacher, building class community is one of my primary goals! Throughout the year, my students continually participate in activities that promote positive choice-making. As issues arise in our room that need to be worked on, we work together as a class to come up with solutions. Topics have included cheating, bullying, being bossy, listening (just to name a few). Students learn that making good choices helps build community which then creates a productive classroom environment. Each person in our class is responsible for making that happen. The books that I have requested will be a tremendous help in highlighting behaviors/concepts that children often experience (in and outside of the classroom), and can serve as springboards for class discussions and activities. I already have a few books by Julia Cook. She has a wonderful way of addressing social skills that can be a problem for children. The kids love the stories, and can easily relate to the various situations. We often use the strategies she highlights in working out our own game plans in our classroom! I find that her books become favorites during independent reading time as well!
