While my students are learning our school curriculum they also need exposure to real world experiences to help better prepare them for the 21st century. I have chosen to have a fish tank in my classroom to help teach my students about responsibility, citizenship, and ecosystems. This will be done through students taking care of the fish as well as researching the things that they need to stay healthy. Hands-on learning is the best tool I can give my students. By having responsibility for the classroom fish my students will learn how to care for animals as well as have respect for the environment. Students will learn about the nitrogen cycle that is necessary for the fish to survive and how that works in local ecosystems. By filling our fish tank with plants, colorful fish, and shrimp students will have a first hand experience of how fresh water ecosystems work and the responsibility that they have to keep them clean and healthy.
