When you enter a Starbucks and look around the space, you usually see people-either alone, in pairs, or in small groupss-productively working. The company creates spaces specifically designed for comfort and productivity as they want people to come in and stay awhile. I too want to create that kind of warm, welcoming environment for my students through flexible seating. When students are allowed to pick where they work, student engagement and productivity is drastically increased. Flexible seating encourages students to make decisions that benefit their learning style the most. Additionally, with clusters of seating scattered around the room, it allows for creates greater opportunity for students to collaborate, communicate, and to work critically and creatively in an environment that feels comfortable and safe. With a focus on 21st Century skills in education and project based learning, this kind of learning environment fosters productivity and offers greater accessibility for students to work together in a engaging environment.
