As I am working on my Master's in Reading, I have come to the realization that my classroom library is lacking in many ways. I have many older publications, books that are not at an appropriate reading level, and few high interest titles. I also lack books with diverse perspectives. Books are mirrors and windows. They are mirrors in the sense that they can allow students to see themselves and reflect on who they are and who they want to become. They can let them know that they are not alone in thier struggles. Books are windows because they allow students to see into the world of others and gain empathy for people unlike themselves. Books can take students into new lands (both real and fantastical), expanding their imaginations.
