The materials I am requesting are essential in helping my students to achieve. In order to make academic gains and begin to close the achievement gap, my kids need to feel calm and safe. My kids have to endure a harsh reality when they are outside the walls of our school and so I need to make their time in class as supportive and comforting as possible. The materials I am requesting to create this comfort zone will allow my students to refocus their energy and put them on a path for success. We will utilize the couch, mats, and flex seating to create a safe space for students to vent their frustrations and then utilize coping mechanisms to bring them back to their baseline. The items funded from your donation will give students an area to consistently practice coping strategies that they will be learning throughout the year. This steady practice in a comfortable and familiar space will allow my kids to become more autonomous at regulating their emotions and refraining from immediately reacting to a situation in a negative and unproductive manner. My hope is that through offering this special space, my students will realize the possibilities that exist for them and make a change in their own lives and community.
