Our school community loves hatching eggs each year. In my classroom we do this in the Spring to teach embryology and watch the miracle of life! The science behind success requires students to be patient and continuously monitor the temperature and humidity of the incubator. Our old incubator is having trouble maintaining a constant temperature and humidity. For a successful hatching rate, you need to keep the incubator steady at 99 degrees. We are hoping a new system will help us monitor both temperature and humidity more accurately so we can increase our numbers of eggs hatched. After the eggs are put in the incubator, they will hatch in 21 days! That is 21 days of keeping the suspense alive in your classroom. I allow students to candle the eggs one time a week during the growth stage to see how the chicks are developing. After the eggs hatch, the whole school gets eager to come see the chicks! After the chicks are kept under their heat lamp for at least four weeks the chicks go to their new homes. During their brooding time in the classroom, chicks are monitored for their growth. This year, I want to incorporate more math into the project by having students measure chick weight weekly and calculate their growth rate per week. Almost all of them go to a student or another teacher so they can have laying hens at their homes when the project is complete. Chicks that don't find a home find their way to a teacher's house to join her flock. (Yes - the Agriculture Teacher is a crazy chicken lady.)
