The books I'm requesting for my classroom will be used to help my students make connections between their own lives and the topics they will be writing about. Most of my students have limited backgrounds and need exposure not only to a variety of text, but to a variety of life experiences. By incorporating different texts into our lessons, students will have an even greater chance to build understanding of things they have not yet experienced. Additionally, by including text on many topics using both fiction and nonfiction, my students will have a chance to hear and use vocabulary they do not use in their daily lives. Texts like Hiromi's Hands, Mr. Lincoln's Way, and Salt in His Shoes: Michael Jordan in Pursuit of a Dream, will help to expose our students to experiences like working in a restaurant, as a principal, or towards being a great basketball player, all through a multicultural lens. More familiar texts like The Berenstain Bears texts will be used to help students make personal connections to experiences they've already had in order to help them choose relevant details to respond to writing prompts.
