My 8th graders deserve enjoyable reading experiences. Too often they have experienced reading as a joyless, grade-based activity. Outside of school, we see people reading at coffee shops, book stores, parks, buses, the list is endless. People choose to read in environments that they feel comfortable in. My favorite place to read as a teen was outside because it helped me to better immerse myself into the world of my book. I want my students to have those same memories. In my classroom, I have created a reading nook complete with couches, plants, bookshelves, etc. to complete this nook I am hoping to get a coffee/tea cart (decaf of course :)) that the students can have access to. I want them to feel like the adults they see reading in coffee shops and bookstores. Comfortable and important. If we really want kids to read, we should be intentional about the framing of their reading situations and environment. This will also be a great way for us to learn about how to take care of community resources together so we can all enjoy them. Maintenance of the cart will be student ran as well as the grant proposals to local vendors when we need to re-up our product. Please help us to get started so all of us can fall in love with reading again.
