My students come from a diverse set of backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions, but each and every one of them comes to school each day ready to learn new concepts and experience new things. The population of my school is 41% Title 1A students and 69% free and reduced lunch, so my students face a number of challenges each day. Many students come back to school in the fall having not had exposure to quality, age/grade level appropriate books at home during the summer or lacked parental motivation or support to continue making progress in their reading during the summer break. Throughout the school year I work to get kids excited about reading and to help them find a specific topic or genre they might love and be able to connect to. In order to do this, I try to expose students to a broad range of books and help them feel successful and proud of their work and reading capabilities.
