The materials I am requesting for the art room will be used to teach a lesson in the concepts of solubility, color mixing, and the movement of molecules. I am requesting 6x6 in. white ceramic tiles to be used as the surface for the experiment. They will use the Sharpie brush pens requested to draw on the tile. I am requesting medicine droppers which will be used to drop the 100% Isoprophyl rubbing alcohol onto the colors created by the sharpie pens. The final project will be sprayed with Krylon Clear spray paint to make the designs permanent. The students will understand the concept of Solubility by mixing Sharpie pen ink (the solute) with alcohol (the solvent.) When the two mix together, it is called a saturated solution. Students will be able to see the molecules move because the colors will mix on their own as they spread across the tile. In addition to demonstrating solubility, this project will also be used to explain the reaction of silt in rainstorms. The white tiles represent land and the marks on the tile made with sharpie pen represent silt. The medicine droppers of rubbing alcohol represent rainstorms. This lesson embraces concepts like solubility, environmental impacts, silt distribution, evaporation, weather and color theory. Students will be able to understand these scientific process while creating a beautiful piece of art work!
