We are looking to develop a chess program at our school that will be designed to not only develop students' critical and strategic thinking skills, but also their ability to vocalize their thoughts as they deepen their understanding of the game. Our students are primarily children of immigrants and refugees. English is their second language and is not often spoken in their homes, and school is the only place where they are able to practice using English on a consistent basis. Any opportunity to practice speaking out loud in front of others is an opportunity for them to learn to better advocate for themselves. Having students explain their thinking as they learn chess strategy will be an integral component of this project. We have several students (5th through 8th grade) who have expressed interest in having dedicated time to learn how to play chess, and we have started a club for that purpose. We are in need of additional sets to accommodate the demand, and would like a variety of sets that can be used by both beginners and more advanced players.
