My favorite time of the day is right in the morning. My sleepy-eyed kindergarteners walk into our room eager for the learning and fun that the day holds. Then comes the best part of the day: Morning Meeting. I play the guitar as my children gather on the bare floor and sing with me. We sing our hello song to one another, then we talk about our feelings and set the agenda for the day. It is the richest part of the day for building classroom community and overall relationships with one another. However, one thing is missing. A gathering rug. A rug creates structure, warmth, and connection between classmates. Students are able to easily talk with "elbow partners" in the square of the rug beside them when discussing a posed question. Differentiated learners can easily work in a square on the rug instead of their seats. My students need to be emotionally and cognitively benefitting from the organization, warmth, and community that a classroom rug brings to our day.
