Everyday, my students come to the meeting area for community circles, lessons, demonstrations, and shares. We are lucky enough to have a Smartboard that is utilized daily during all of these activities. However, the Smartboard does not allow us to view resources, such as a book during a read aloud, or student work, such as a student writing piece during a share in Writing Workshop, up close and large in front of them. Having a document camera will allow me to display resources and student work in front of them to better engage my students and support their learning. For instance, I can use the document camera during a Writing Workshop lesson to zoom up close in various mentor texts in order to highlight strategies and skills used by mentor authors. This way, students can see what they can implement in their own writing in order to strengthen their craft. During a read aloud, I can also use the document camera to display the text being read so that the entire class can see and follow along, allowing us to read together and work on comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency work. In addition to this, a document camera will allow me to model implementing strategies in the moment to my students as well as allow my students to display their work to each other. Document cameras are an excellent resource tool for a dynamic learning environment because it makes it easy to display resources, student work, and objects. This tool will promote engaging, interactive, and collaborative lessons, and better support the visual learners in my classroom.
