I currently teach American Literature and my students often complain of the literary choices given; they are reading books by Fitzgerald and Cullen. And although these are great American classics, they do not reflect the identity of my students. This novel will not only help my students grow their literacy, but also will help them to see the American Dream through the writing of someone who looks like them and understands the dynamics of being Black and searching for their American Dream. Invisible Man is an American classic that I believe my students should read as a part of the American classic collection.
