My students are avid, passionate readers. When a student came up to ask me if we had any poetry books in our classroom library, it broke my heart when I realized we had only one! A well-rounded library is incredibly important for young readers. The selected books will give my students a range of poetry to read, and I have made an effort to choose poetry books that will appeal to a variety of interests. There is some silly poetry (A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein), some serious poetry (Free Verse by Sarah Dooley), some classic poetry (Walt Whitman), some sports poetry (The Crossover by Kwame Alexander), and some adventure poetry (Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai). It is my priority to enrich my students' reading lives. Giving them access to poetry helps foster their literary growth - and strong literacy skills will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
