Because math is not a spectator sport, my students need the calculators in order to assist them with their calculations as they dive into algebra. Practice, practice, practice is the key to learning math and when students do not have math facts in their head they can be assisted by using a calculator when solving equations. Many of my students have a weak math background and one of the best ways to learn algebra is with manipulatives like algebra tiles. They will be able to set up and work with equations as they learn to work with combining like terms and increasing their number sense.
