My school serves over 600 students, with approximately 95% of them qualifying for free or reduced price lunch based on their economic status (Title I school status). More than 92% of the student population are Latino/a and 100% of the students in my classroom are Emerging Bilingual students, attempting to deepen their native language skills (Spanish) while simultaneously acquiring English. With the right resources, we can eliminate some of the many obstacles facing my students, giving them the opportunity to harness their biliteracy and bicultural gifts toward success and pride in who they are. Research has proven that hot environments make it difficult to concentrate. My classroom is on the 2nd floor, and the building is without AC. We will be more focused on learning with a cooling system. My school is working to get more technology for the classrooms. There are some carts of laptops that we have access to, but are shared between teachers. Affluent communities have the privilege to have 1:1 technology (a computer for each student) all day long. The requested chromebooks would be housed in our classroom, and would be extremely helpful. They would be used for keyboarding practice (test prep), research for our animal defense unit, easier access to their GoogleDocs, phonics program access for students struggling to acquire English, and much more! Finally, a color printer would help cut down on prep time and allow for greater differentiation in engaging all students. Printers in the school are shared by more than 60 staff members and they usually get jammed, toner isn't replaced, or there is a line to make copies (teachers have no time to spare). A printer would allow students to instantly publish their work, attach color pictures to new vocabulary words, & color code HW for visual learners.
