I teach in an urban district in Massachusetts. About 93% of our talented and hard working students receive free or reduced lunch. It’s a very small school of just 210 students, and it lacks many of the amenities that are now standard in non-urban schools such as classroom computers, whiteboards and a gym. Funding for supplies is limited; teachers buy most of their materials. My second grade students represent diverse backgrounds culturally, linguistically, and racially. They face many challenges when outside of school, due to the effects of poverty. Yet, they come to school eager and excited to learn each day. However, many are below grade level in math and reading. I wish to make their experience at school one that is challenging in a positive way. To do this, I need resources to meet my students’ unique needs. I would like to provide the materials needed to foster growth both academically and socially, so that they will be successful in school and out.
