Children need to participate in structured physical activities to avoid obesity, foster social diversity, and to encourage them to engage in sports, activities, and games now and in the future Studies show that when kids are active, their bodies and minds can do what they want them to do. Healthy choices follow closely behind physical ability and fun. Children from low-income families most often have less opportunity for participation in physical activity due to factors such as unsafe streets or limited access to playgrounds, and limited access to equipment. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, there is a strong relationship between family income and physical activity, with low-income families being the most sedentary. These children miss out on the positive outcomes that are linked to regular exercise, including longer life expectancies, improved mental and physical health, and better grades in school. Without participation in group oriented physical activities, they are denied lessons in discipline, teamwork, and resilience—the very qualities that most parents want for their children—which are often taught in athletics. This is where our school can make a difference. Lower income families may utilize their immediate environment (school) to encourage activity, and with after school sports and physical activities, students have the opportunity to be active with teacher support and guidance. Our soccer equipment is lacking. We have various sized balls, made of different materials, and most falling apart. The soccer balls we are so desperately needing will be utilized during and after school.
