Years ago, our school had a dedicated room that was specially created for students with special needs. This room had adapted lighting, a dropped ceiling, and numerous spaces for students to relax. In addition, this space had a treadmill, flexible seating, therapy items, and a cool down corner. This room was perfect for students as a space for students to take a quick break during the day, as needed. Sensory rooms provide opportunities for students who are overwhelmed by everyday stimuli to relax and decompress. Sensory rooms can be used as a preventative measure to give students a space to get out energy and avoid negative behaviors in the classroom. Giving students this time away from their normal classroom can also improve focus and attention. In my ideal sensory room, the items listed below would provide a comfortable and cozy environment for my students. The therapy swing provides students with a snug feeling, which can decrease some of the sensory overload they may be feeling. This also is a fun place for kiddos to relax. Similarly, the two inflatable loungers are additional flexible seating to be used to relax within the space. I'm hoping to make this room as calming as possible, and the Ocean Wave projector will help with that. This projector also has the capability to play music or white noise. Therapy putty in different strengths is a good fidget for kiddos who have extra energy. The lava lamp and the fiber optic lamp also help create a calming environment. I'm hoping with these lights, the overhead fluorescent lights won't be necessary. I would like the door fringe to separate the room into two parts, to give a more individual space if students are needing this. Finally, the liquid motion bubblers are good visual calmers.
