Closing the gap between how students are being educated and how they learn best is essential. In today's world, libraries are transforming into those innovation centers where authentic learning is beginning to take shape. By developing stations in the media center where students can experiment with the eight multiple intelligences, and giving them the opportunity to be successful in that realm, we are letting them take ownership in their educational experience and setting the stage for a lifetime of learning. Last year I developed several different stations in the library that students were naturally drawn to. I gathered resources such as free software for students who were interested in art and music. I used limited funds from my budget to create interpersonal and intrapersonal spaces with flexible seating, and I had a parent who graciously purchased Makerspace items such as Legos, Kevoplanks, and board games for visual-spatial and logical-mathematical learners. This year I want to add a media center. After sifting through our tech department's inventory, I have found everything I need except the green screen and lights. Students will be able to record videos and produce podcasts! I also have athletes that will benefit from the stationary bikes with the book holders. They will be able to read or research on a Chromebook while expending that endless middle school energy. Lastly, I would like to add circuit boards to my Makerspace for my "budding" scientist. Watching them grab a task card, collaborate, and seeing their faces light up when they "nail" a project is so rewarding.
