Environment shapes the experience we have; when we are comfortable we are more present in what is happening around us. In the classroom, my goal is to have a place where students feel comfortable and are focused to learn. A key component to my everyday management of my teaching is the involvement of movement. Incorporating cooperative learning strategies, brain breaks, collaborative study all allow my students to form a sense of community. The purpose of my innovative project for the 2018 school year is to create a sense of mobility throughout the classroom making the learning environment more fluid. Having flexible seating allows students to move within the classroom, allows them to choose what works best for them so they are able to work comfortably, and allows them to wiggle while in their seat in order to focus. Currently the movement happening in my classroom, while in a standard student chair, is backwards or grabbing on the sides and rocking back and forth. I have had many students fall backwards from leaning back! I have also had many broken screws from leaning back, resulting in broken chairs. By providing students with ball chairs and wobble stools, students will be allowed to wiggle without worry of falling or breaking their chair. Plus, standard chairs are awkward for students to move around a tight fitting classroom. Having flexible seating allows students to move within the classroom, allows them to choose what works best for them so they are able to work comfortably, and allows them to wiggle while in their seat in order to focus. Students are learning that a classroom doesn’t have to be a place that is orderly and uncomfortable but a place of flexibility and opportunity. Student needs are changing. It is important to me to acknowledge this change
