When our students came to us with the idea of conducting a school play, we knew that there would be challenges to overcome. None of these challenges, though, are more pressing than the budget. They had their hearts set on performing an adaptation of the board game and movie, “Clue,” and were genuinely inspired to make it happen. Seeing their enthusiasm, we knew we had to make this dream a reality. We decided to move forward with the play, but, as predicted, the budget almost immediately became a barrier. Due to circumstances outside of our control, the licensing cost increased significantly from the amount that we were originally quoted, and this has dramatically decreased our funding for the actual creation and implementation of the play. The students will be responsible for creating things such as props, costumes, and artwork for the play. They will also produce advertisements for the play such as brochures and posters. Funding for these supplies is very low, and has consequently limited us in what materials we will be able to provide them as they continue to plan, create, and build. This play will be the first of its kind in our school’s history, and we are determined to give our students this opportunity. Without the necessary funding, however, it will be nearly impossible to produce the items required for a successful play.
