With twenty years in primary classrooms I know that many students do best when given the option of choosing their own classroom seat! Through an organized system of flexible seating students will be able to decide where their learning will happen. What would you choose? A yoga ball to help get the wiggles out? A soft cushion with a lap desk in front of you? Maybe you'd prefer the traditional desk? In our classroom it is all about choice. I am beyond excited to kick off the new school year by giving my unique students a classroom spot specific to their learning style! The goal of flexible seating is to allow the students to work in a space that is most beneficial to their learning style. For example, some students have difficulty sitting in a traditional style desk and chair for an extended amount of time and will often stand while completing assignments. I have always allowed this to happen, although the workspace isn't ideal because the desk isn't the correct height or they may be standing in someone's view of the speaker. This project will allow me the ability to create different spaces in the classroom for students to utilize. For example, some students may choose to work on a private rug spot with a lap desk; this could provide them with space away from other learners and allow them to have better focus. A different student may use the bouncy ball at their desk to help them get the wiggles out and provide sensory integration that they may be seeking. Part of flexible seating is changing work spaces which will mean I need to provide a solid organizational system for student materials; I plan to utilize the books bins for this purpose. I truly appreciate your support!
